BIODIV, Biological Diversity , Similarity, Niche Overlap, and Cluster Analysis, Vers. 5.1

BIODIV was created for biologists working in the field of floristics, faunistics, community ecology and biogeography. The program processes an ASCII data file containing a species-by-site matrix which may contain full scientific and authors' names of the species as well as both presence/absence and quantitative data. It has a built-in editor allowing easier input, editing, transformation and allows printing data tables in SIMPLE format, as well as viewing ASCII files of arbitrary formats. The manual includes explanations on all menu commands, computational formulas, comments and recommendations on the various statistics taken from important recent literature sources.
bulletData edit/transformations: Built-in ASCII editor, transposition of rows to columns, transformation into/from Cornell Condensed Format used in DECORANA, TWINSPAN, and CANOCO, percentage, square root, and logarithmic transformations, summations of columns, transformation of quantitative data to presence/absence.
bulletAlpha-diversity: More than 20 diversity and evenness measures and related statistics (Simpson, Berger-Parker, McIntosh, Margalef, Menchinick, Fager, Shannon, Brillouin, Pielou, Hill, Alatalo, Molinari, Q-statistic, the log series index alpha completed with goodness of fit test, and some others). Hutcheson's corrections and method for statistical evaluation of difference in diversity (Shannon). Jarviren's index (2D) for calculating similarity among communities based on the Shannon's formula.
bulletBeta-diversity: Whittaker, Cody, Wilson & Schmida indices as well as Euclidean distance for quantitative data. Plots changes in betadiversity along a gradient.
bulletRarefaction: Expected number of species per either standardized area or sample size, distribution and variance of the results, graphic representation of the rarefaction curves.
bulletAssociation: Computes similarity indices of Braun-Blanquet, Szymkiewicz-Simpson, Czekanowski-Dice-Sorenson, Kulczynski, Ochiai-Berkman, Jaccard, Sokal-Sneath, Renkonen, Morisita-Horn, etc. Three forms of extension of similarity indices for quantitative data. Kendall's rank correlation coefficient is included.
bulletSimilarity: Statistics for calculating similarity on presence/absence data including species absences are the simple matching coefficient of Sokal & Michener, the index of Rogers and Tanimoto, the three similarity indices of Sokal & Sneath, the two indices of Baroni-Urbani & Buser, the chi-square criterion, Yule's tetrahoric correlation coefficient, and the three taxonomic relationship indices of Smirnov.
bulletNiche Overlap: Diversity and similarity indices may be used as niche width and overlap measures. McArthur-Levin, Pianka, Hurlbert indices provide a direct measure of overlap among species.
bulletCluster Analysis: Dendrograms based on single, complete, unweighted and weighted average, weighted and unweighted centroid clustering methods.

Graphic representations include pie charts, histograms and graphic complementations.

Requirements:This program was written for DOS and runs in early versions of Windows. On Windows 7 and 8 it needs to be run using an emulator. DOSbox is free and works quite well. Detailed instructions
